Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
We are coming to the end of Book 1 of the Wonder City! Owen, now back at school, is trying to piece his life back together after the disappearance of his sister Lizzie. Coming home from school, he finds his mother consulting a physic named Madame Lena. But it’s her whacky predictions involving Owen that convince him it’s time to take action… whether he likes it or not.
Although the Tulips live on Baltic Street in what is known as Boerum Hill today, Owen’s school building is actually modeled after PS. 39 also known as the Henry Bristow School in Park Slope. Predating the Brooklyn Bridge, it was built between the years of 1876-1877 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Also, take note of the address on Madame Lena’s card. It’s VERY deliberate. You’ll find out why soon.
