The Queens Council on the Arts (QCA) has just announced its newest residency program in collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). The QCA AirPort Residency, which will give Queens-based artists the opportunity to showcase their art at LaGuardia Airport, will accept four artists who will each receive a $3,000 stipend, and spend a three-month period exhibiting work inside the airport’s landmarked Marine Air Terminal (Terminal A).

The aim of the program is to provide visitors with a cultural experience unique to Queens by activating public spaces. Selected artists will be able to expand their reach and have the opportunity to interact with their audience in a non-traditional location. As QCA Executive Director, Hoong Yee Krakauer, states: “An artist creating work in an airport can transform your commute into a journey.”

Although Queens is filled with vibrant communities, it is often overshadowed by Manhattan and Brooklyn. By presenting work from the borough, the resident artists will be able to showcase its diverse culture and encourage more visitors to come see what Queens has to offer. In fact, travelers are encouraged to engage in conversation with the resident artists to learn more about their work during regular open studio hours.

As part of the program, the artists will have access to a 110-square-feet studio within the airport to conduct research and create more work. Literary, visual, and media artists are all encouraged to apply for the residency, which serves as the first partnership between the QCA and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Applications are being accepted through Thursday, April 5 at 11:59pm, and will be reviewed by a panel that includes representatives from the Port Authority and members of the Queens arts community. Visit the QCA website for application instructions and eligibility requirements.
