Wednesday, December 4th - See Rare and Unpublished Drawings by a Renowned Architect

Join authors Jay Wickersham, Chris Milford, and Hope Mayo as they discuss their new book about architect Henry Hobson Richardson, the greatest American architect of the 19th century and an inspiration to Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Hear about Richardson’s friendship and artistic partnership with Frederick Law Olmsted, the creator of Central Park and his neighbor on Staten Island, see extraordinary drawings for Richardson’s & Olmsted’s collaborations on the Buffalo State Insane Asylum and the New York State Capitol in Albany, as well as many other Gilded Age landmarks designed by Richardson, and learn how Richardson shaped the artistry and careers of his young assistants Charles McKim and Stanford White, who would become New York’s leading architects of the next generation!

December 8th - Washington Square and the Birth of 5th Ave

When someone thinks of Art Deco architecture they think of looking up. But what if some of the most interesting stories about New York City’s Art Deco structures are better told underground? On this Underground Art Deco tour, some of the most celebrated Art Deco buildings in Manhattan will be approached and spoken about from the perspective of what’s going on underneath them. Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to see and admire icons like the Chrysler Building, the Graybar Building, the General Electric Building, and Rockefeller Center in their above-ground glory as well.
