How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
What if we told you that within New York City lives the beating heart of the art of sculpting? The roots of some of the city’s most recognizable works of public art — from the Alice in Wonderland sculpture in Central Park to the Fiorello LaGuardia statue in LaGuardia Place and Ai Wei Wei’s mask sculptures — are actually hidden in plain sight in the Modern Art Foundry, located inside the former carriage house of the famous Steinway Mansion. It is a a mecca for sculptors, where artistic visions become realized in metal by a passionate team of craftsmen.
Though the facility is normally only open for sculptors and high-end art clients, Untapped New York has been coordinating special behind-the-scenes tours of the Modern Art Foundry for the last four years. Our spring date for the tour of this hidden gem is set for May 15th and tickets are now available.
The tour will be led by third generation owner, Jeffrey Spring and guests will be treated to a live bronze metal pouring. You’ll learn about the whole process of artistic fabrication—starting from when an artist comes up with a vision to when the final piece of art is realized, and get a behind-the-scenes look at artists working on projects inside the foundry.
