Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
The Arlo Hotels may ring a bell to our readers, as the Nomad location was one of the design-savvy filming locations featured in the Amazon Video show Modern Love, based on the New York Times column. Down at the Arlo Soho Hotel, “Apres Arlo” will transport you to the Swiss Alps this winter without stepping a foot outside of Manhattan.
The spot in west Soho is just what the city needs to stay excited about the winter season long after the holidays have ended. Despite its location inside the Arlo Soho Hotel, you actually won’t find the courtyard crawling with tourists or see it posted all over every influencer feed (yet!) unlike a lot of other chalet-inspired spots.

Enter through the hotel’s restaurant Harold’s and the hostess will bring you to a private cabin. Cozy up with the fuzzy pillows and throw a wool blanket on. A wooden antler chandelier hanging over the room’s main table sets the mood for a more proper seated dinner with friends.

Choose from warm and inviting homemade pasta dishes or classic pizzas off of the Harold’s menu. The hot toddy selection is fun to choose from and includes the flavorful French Alps Toddy (cointreau, lavender and orange) and the more classic, wintery Top of the Mountain Toddy (whiskey, caramel and apple cider) amongst others. As you relax, sip a drink and your waiter comes for a refill, you’ll have yourself second guessing that you aren’t at a resort somewhere up north. The speakers play lively music inside your cabin, and can create more of a ski lodge party vibe if you’re with a big group.

The nightly snowfall from 6 to 7 pm takes this experience to another level that most other chalet-themed spots in the city can’t compete with. It feels like a dream to sit inside the cabins as the flakes fall outside, or to watch from the courtyard as they descend upon the wooden rooftops. The cabin porches offer perhaps the best photo taking spot, as you pose on a rocking chair amongst snow shoes, wreaths and garlands. Simply sitting at one of the courtyard bistro tables on a warmer day with a coffee and a book or laptop even offers a peaceful atmosphere in which to work or relax.

The cozy and calming cabins are the perfect spot to unwind and recharge amongst the fast paced city life just steps away outside (Expect meditation and yoga classes and as well as massages on Friday and Saturday for the rest of the season). Apre Arlo will be open through March 21.
