Explore the old and the new on Staten Island’s north shore in the historic town of St. George. This holiday season, Insiders will go behind-the-scenes of the newly opened Empire Outlets, a sprawling waterfront shopping center designed by SHOP Architects, and inside the historic St. George Theater which celebrated its 90th anniversary this year! Empire Outlets is New York City’s very first outlet destination. The innovative space, which features 340,000 square feet of retail and dining including an outdoor patio and beer garden, will be decked out in splendid holiday decor just in time for our visit. The tree will even be lit! Insiders will get to see the highlights of this new shopping destination, located within a short walk from the Staten Island ferry, and areas that are not yet opened to the public.

After a tour of the outlets, we will head down the road to the historic St. George Theater for a behind-the-scenes tour. Built in 1929 and recently restored for a re-opening in 2004, the St. George Theater first opened as a movie palace to rival those in Manhattan. Designed with a blend of Spanish and Italian Baroque styles, the theater has since hosted performances by musicians such as Tony Bennet, Pat Benatar, and Ringo Starr, and comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Joan Rivers and Kevin James.

The Masters Building, former home of The Riverside Museum, will be 90 years old this month. Now a residential building, The Masters is honoring its artistic heritage with an exhibition of work by New York artist Anna Walinska. Anna Walinska: Return to the Riverside will showcase works created during Walinska’s studio residency at the Masters from 1955 through 1971.

The exhibition, curated by Michael Alicia and Jan Fort, includes drawings, paintings and collages that showcase the breadth of Walinska’s range and her talent as an abstract expressionist. On this special tour, Insiders will walkthrough the exhibition with one of the curators, and Walinska’s niece and custodian of the estate, Rosina Rubin. Along with a tour of the exhibition, Insiders will also gain access to one of the building’s active artist studios and learn about the history of the landmarked building. Anna Walinska: Return to the Riverside will be on view through January 24, 2020.
