How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
This October, join us for these exciting behind-the-scenes tours into the places we show you on Untapped Cities, led by those directly involved in the spaces. Here’s a guide to what’s coming up:
On this walking tour of East and West Harlem on October 1st at 6pm, guests will learn about the history of the neighborhood and observe first-hand the role of new incubator spaces and urban redevelopment projects on the present and future of Harlem. Stop will include La Marqueta and the Hot Bread Kitchen Incubator, led by Nadia Munoz, NYCEDC’s project lead for the Marqueta and the Head of Operations at Hot Bread Kitchen. There will also be a climb to the top of the Corn Exchange Building to take in the views of Harlem as well as a sneak peak inside the renovation. Only 5 spots still available.
On October 11th, take a tour of the opulent United Palace Theatre, described by The New York Times as a “delirious masterpiece” and a “feast” of ornamentation, led by Mike Fitelson Executive Director of the United Palace of Cultural Arts. Fitelson will share the backstory of the theater, its revitalization and its future while we visit the grand foyer, the theater, the mezzanine, the loge and a sneak peek inside the former men’s smoking lounge. Ticket also includes entry into the Women of the Fox Film Festival screening that evening of Down Argentine Way, starring Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. Only 12 spots still available.
Untapped Cities is excited to offer this new, Untapped Cities-exclusive tour of the normally off-limits Woolworth Building led by architect Cass Gilbert’s great granddaughter, Helen Post Curry, who runs the Woolworth Building tours. In addition to a guided visit through the spectacular lobby, we will also visit the cellar level where the bank vault is located and where the former entrances to the subway are, and provide special access to the gorgeous mezzanine level. Spots are still available.
A special tour of the remnants of Penn Station with Tamara Agins, licensed tour guide, project manager at NYC Department of City Planning, and author of our popular article on the Secrets of Grand Central and Justin Rivers from the play The Eternal Space. Weaving in never before published photographs from the play, the tour will also cover the past, present and future plans for the transportation hub, accompanying a hunt for the remaining pieces of the grand McKim, Mead & White station. A portion of the tickets supports The Eternal Space, which has been previewed at The Center for Architecture.
For $75, tour goers will receive tickets to our Remnants of Penn Station tour and a 20% discounted ticket to The Eternal Space Play for a date of their choice (during the Off-Broadway run between November 14th and December 6th, schedule here). Our October 25th tour will be a special one, planned as an anniversary to the demolition which began October 28th, 1963. The December 6th tour will mark the final show of The Eternal Space in New York City. Once tickets are purchased, we will reach out to you to issue you tickets to The Eternal Space
