Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
Love is blooming in the heart of Times Square! Every year, Times Square Arts host a Love and Design Competition where various artists and design studios submit proposals for a Valentine’s Day public art installation. This year’s winner, the 15th annual, was “Love’s h|edge” by Almost Studio, an interactive row of heart-shaped hedges that will be filled with roses as the days pass.
The maze-like installation features four heart-shaped hedge rows that invite visitors to explore. Inside the labyrinth of hedges, visitors will come across illuminated benches and trellises. Hidden speakers provide a soundtrack for chance encounters and quiet moments. The paths within the sculptural work were built to ADA-accessible building codes for increased inclusivity. The artificial garden is filled with sights, sounds, and smells that provide a multi-sensory experience.
As the month progresses, the hedges will become more and more full of fresh cuts roses. Every day through the month of February, at 1pm, there will be a fresh-cut rose giveaway on Duffy Square. The roses will be handed out by Times Square ambassadors, local New Yorkers, and celebrity guests. The roses can be placed in the hedges to give the appearance that more buds are blooming.
“Love’s h/Edge” is just one part of Times Square’s Valentine’s Day celebration of love. On February 14th, couples can renew their vows at a special ceremony on the Red Steps (register here). You can also sign up to get married in front of “Love’s h|Edge” on Valentine’s Day. Details of wedding ceremonies hosted at the Crossroads of the World can be found here.
