How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
While we’ve gone into the construction of 1 World Trade Center ourselves, taking video with Google Glass and riding the see-through external elevator, the latest stunts at the tallest tower in the United States, really take it to the next level. This is the GoPro video made by base jumpers who took off from the top of the tower last September. Go to 1:30 to get your feet tingling, 2:20 for the first jump and 2:50 for first person POV free fall.
The group, Andrew Rossig, James Brady, Marco Markovich and Kyle Hartwell, surrendered to the police on Monday after police tracked them down after four months. According to The New York Times, the parachutists also believe their stunt reveals a key security flaw with the building:
“We just kind of walked in,” Andrew Rossig, 33, one of the parachutists, said before going with his lawyer to the First Precinct station house in Lower Manhattan. “It’s supposed to be the most secure building in the world. God forbid it was somebody else getting in there with a real intention to harm New Yorkers.”
Last week, a 16-year old also gained access to the building in the night, going through a fence and riding the elevator to the 88th floor.
