On one of Untapped Cities’ featured tours, we got a special look at Rooftop Reds in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This establishment is the first “commercially viable rooftop vineyard in New York City,” according to the company’s website.
Rooftop Reds opened in 2015. Since then, they have been growing their first batch of grapes, which will be ready for harvest in October 2016. The actual wine will be bottled and sold sometime in autumn 2017.
On the tour, you will learn about what it takes to be the first “viable rooftop vineyard” in the Big Apple, and how Rooftop Reds makes due in an urban environment. CEO Devin Shomaker broke everything down to even what soil they use to achieve a proper harvest.
But when one goes on a wine tour, he or she expects to also taste some wine. So lucky for you, Rooftop Reds also has their wine from the Finger Lakes vineyard. There is both red and white wine, and you will get plenty to try after the tour of the entire facility. On top of this, the roof has hammocks, tables, a fully stocked bar and a gorgeous view of the New York City skyline, making it an ideal spot to lounge around and have a good time.
