How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
Join Walt Whitman Initiative President and NYU Professor Karen Karbiener for a walking tour of Whitman’s Fort Greene area homes and haunts. Starting at Fort Greene Park, Insiders will walk through Whitman’s beloved borough, making stops at some of the sites he frequented during his lifetime. Along the way, along the way, participants will join Karbiener in reading selections of Whitman’s poetry written in or about his beloved Brooklyn. The tour will end at 99 Ryerson Street, Whitman’s home when he completed the first edition of Leaves of Grass in 1855, and the single Whitman residence (of over 30) that still stands. The Walt Whitman Initiative is working with the Coalition to Save Walt Whitman’s House in an effort to draw attention to Whitman’s historical home and its need for protection and preservation. Learn more about their efforts to landmark 99 Ryerson Street, and their recent success in co-naming Ryerson as “Walt Whitman Way”, at their website!
