The man-made Hoffman and Swinburne Islands have been given over to nature. These artificial landmasses in Lower New York Bay were constructed with landfill in the 1870s to quarantine newly arrived immigrants suffering from contagious diseases, but human use of the islands ceased in the 1940s. For the past eighty-plus years the site has become a sanctuary for birds and seals, making the site the perfect backdrop for a new wildlife-spotting river cruise.

The Urban Naturalist Tour: Seals, Seabirds, and Winter Wildlife is a nearly three-hour excursion that starts at Chelsea Piers. The journey will take you past the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan's Financial District, through the Buttermilk Channel, under the Verrazzano Bridge, and along Staten Island to Hoffman and Swinburne Islands. You will return to Chelsea Piers with a slow pass at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island!

While you enjoy the stunning views of New York City, you will learn about the conservation efforts aimed at preserving the precious ecosystems of our waterways and the ongoing research conducted by organizations such as the NYC Bird Alliance and Parks’ Natural Resources Group, as they strive to protect and nurture the diverse wildlife that call these islands home. While seal sightings are not guaranteed, seals have been a constant inhabitant of Swinburne and Hoffman during winter for the past several years.
