Since its humble start as a “small weekend festival,” the Chelsea Music Festival has grown to an annual (and highly anticipated) event, featuring world-class and newcomer musicians. Now in its eighth year, its 2017 summer program, “Measuring Time,” will explore the theme of pulse and time through performing, visual and culinary arts. It all kicks off on June 9th — and you can join in on the nine-day celebration by winning two tickets to the event in our special giveaway.

This year’s festival runs until June 17th, featuring works from artists like Telemann, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Messiaen and Cage, just to name a few. In addition, art exhibitions, curated dinners, family events and lectures will be presented inside some of New York City’s most unique venues, such as the C24 Gallery, Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò at NYU, Deutsches Haus at NYU, General Theological Seminary and St. Paul’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church.

“Inspired by its Chelsea roots, the festival seeks to reflect the creativity gathered in one of New York City’s most dynamic neighborhoods by presenting site-specific programs that span musical genres ranging from classical to contemporary to jazz,” the press release notes. In keeping to this mission, CMF focuses on community outreach and education and encourages an interplay of various art forms.

The line-up this year features special events, including:

  • An art exhibition exploring the theme of time, displayed inside partnering venues
  • The first-ever Gallery Walking Tour through the Chelsea Gallery district
  • Culinary explorations and food related visual art, curated by Food Artist Allie Wist
  • A screening of films dealing with time, hosted by award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Rattner
  • A Festival Talk series with leading neuroscientist and Columbia University professor Dr. Michael Shadlen and Beethoven scholar Jan Caeyers
