How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
The last we spoke about the Woolworth Building, we gave readers an inside look at the first completed units in the Woolworth Tower Residences, the luxury condo conversion of the top thirty floors of the landmarked 792-foot edifice. Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that its seven-floor penthouse, aptly named the “Pinnacle,” is hitting the market with a price tag of $110 million, making it the most expensive downtown sale ever (the current sales record stands at $50.9 million for the penthouse at Chelsea’s Walker Tower).

In 2012, Alchemy Properties purchased the top 30 floors of the Woolworth Building (floors 29 to 58) for $68 million with a goal of converting them into 33 condominiums. The floor plan for the 9,710-square-foot “castle in the sky” penthouse was first revealed in 2014. Extending into the stunning copper crown of the building, which previously housed mechanical equipment, it features 24-foot ceilings and a 400-square-foot open observatory that provides expansive views of the city.

As Ken Horn, Alchemy’s founder and president, reveals in the Wall Street Journal, converting the crown of the historic building presented some unique challenges. In order to replace damaged terra cotta, in addition to adding and expanding already existing windows, Alchemy had to first receive approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
At this time, the interior of the penthouse is still raw. However, the developer has released photos of its stunning exterior. Curbed NY also reports that sales have been underway for some time now, though no further information has been shared.
