MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24:Habit by David Levine, part of Crossing the Line presented by FIAF. Within a four-walled, fully furnished and functional American ranch house (stocked refrigerator, working stove, plumbing, running water), three actors perform a 90-minute drama on a continuous loop for eight hours a day. Although the language never changes, they improvise the staging to suit their needs””when they’re hungry, they cook; when they’re dirty, they wash. Spectators will circulate around the house, observing the action through the open windows. A play contained within a sculpture, Habit fuses conventional theater, reality TV, and visual arts performance, short-circuiting our assumptions about spectatorship, performance, routine, reality, and realism. 1-9pm at the Essex Street Market, 130 Essex Street, Building B. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25: 8 Artists Making Sculpture: the 5th Annual Registry Exhibition. Each year, BRIC presents an exhibition of promising, emerging artists selected exclusively from our online Contemporary Artist Registry, the oldest and largest registry of Brooklyn’s visual artists. This, the fifth edition of the Registry show, will focus on artists pursing a wide array of three-dimensional formats, and whose work acts to transform and activate the physical space around them. 12-6pm at BRIC Rotunda Gallery, 33 Clinton Street, Brooklyn. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26: Revolution of Forms: Cuba’s Forgotten Art Schools examines the convergence of architecture, ideology, and culture in 1960s Cuba through the design of the Escuelas Nacionales de Arte (National Art Schools), conceived and initiated by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara soon after the Revolution’s victory. The utopian vision of architects Ricardo Porro, Roberto Gottardi, and Vittorio Garatti integrated issues of culture, ethnicity, and place, reinventing architecture just as the Revolution hoped to reinvent society. 7pm at Van Alen Books, 30 W 22nd Street. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27:Off Center by Adam Weinert. Through the formation of a pop-up company, participants will investigate the institutional offerings and privatization of space around Lincoln Center, the world’s largest performing arts institution, as led by choreographer Adam Weinert. The company will physicalize its findings throughout this walk in a series of dance performances. No previous dance experience necessary. This walk holds 8 people and will be held in English, though Adam also speaks French and Spanish. 6:30pm-8pm at 70 Lincoln Center Plaza. This walk will meet at the fountain at Lincoln Center. $20
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines presented by more than 250 international presses, booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers from over twenty countries. Lucy Lippard and Paul Chan are the keynote speakers for this year’s Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference””a dynamic, two-day symposium on emerging practices and debates within art-book culture. The Classroom””a curated series of artist-led workshops, readings, and discussions””will engage visitors in lively conversation all weekend long.
