MONDAY, JUNE 10: The 18th Annual Poetry Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The walk features some of the nation’s most renowned poets – U.S. poet laureate Natasha Trethewey, Pulitzer Prize winner Galway Kinnell, and presidential inauguration poet Elizabeth Alexander among them – who will be reading poems capturing the spirit of New York along the expanse of the walk from the Financial District to DUMBO. The walk ends at the historic Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn, where guests will enjoy a dinner on the waterfront catered by Danny Meyer’s Blue Smoke. 6:30pm at the Brooklyn Bridge. $250. TUESDAY, JUNE 11: The Museum Mile Festival. One day a year, for the past 33 years, ten of the country’s finest museums —all ones that call Fifth Avenue home— collectively open their doors from 6pm – 9pm for free to New Yorkers and visitors for a mile-long block party and visual art celebration. Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th Street. FREE.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12: AIDS in New York: The First Five Years will explore the impact of the epidemic on personal lives, public health and medical practices, culture, and politics in New York City and the nation. Drawing from the archives of the New York Public Library, New York University, and the National Archive of LGBT History, the show will use posters, photographs, and artifacts to tell the story of the early years of AIDS in New York. NY Historical Society, 170 Central Park West. 10am-6pm. $10 students / $15 general admission.
THURSDAY, JUNE 13: Following the presentation of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal to Dr. Judith Rodin, President, and David Rockefeller, Jr., Board Chair, The Rockefeller Foundation, the MAS Urbanists will host the third annual MAS After Dark Party in Grand Central Terminal. The event will support MAS’s mission to make New York a more livable and resilient city for all. 9pm-12am at Grand Central. Tickets start at $100. Buy tickets here.
FRIDAY, JUNE 14: The Chelsea Music Festival Opening Night Gala “Bridges to Britten”. Curated Gala Reception. The Culinary Isles of Great Britain by 2013 Culinary Artist-in-Residence Sonar Saikia. 7:30pm at the Visual Arts Gallery at the School of Visual Arts, 601 West 26th St. (btwn 11th and 12th Avenues). $65 general admission / $55 students & seniors. SATURDAY, JUNE 15: The annual River to River Festival starts today. Over 150 events in 30 days at 28 sites. Transformative, investigative art in unexpected places across Lower Manhattan. Events start at 8am and run all day. Check out the full schedule on the festival’s website.
SUNDAY, JUNE 16: “Frivolity,” an Elastic City Way. During this way, participants of all ages will share the feeling of frivolity, creating improvised moments and whimsical acts of joy and kindness. The group will draw inspiration from music, found objects, the immediate environment and each other to develop intimate pieces of evaporating performance. 3pm at 209 Water Street, Manhattan (This way will meet outside of Bowne Printers, next to the South Street Seaport Museum.) $10.
