The June 2016 Jazz Age Lawn Party
The last week of August has arrived, with fall just around the corner. But before you get excited for New York City’s autumn events, there’s still some splashy summer ones going on. Continuing from last week, many festivals along with musical and cultural events are still going strong in New York City. Next week, we also have the last of our summer outdoor movie screenings, although many other much-anticipated outdoor events like the Jazz Age Lawn Party are just beginning. So before fall ushers in the cooler days of pumpkin picking and hay rides, enjoy the rest of the summer with these events during the week of August 25th-August 31st.
For a soothing end to the week, the Metropolitan Opera House is offering a pre-festival screening of The Magic Flute in preparation for the first day of its ninth Summer HD Festival, which runs from August 26th-September 4th. The screening will take place outside the opera house with more than 3,000 seats set up each night, as well as additional standing room around Lincoln Center Plaza. Today, watch Ingmar Bergman’s classic 1975 film version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, a co-presentation with the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The festival features nine thrilling performances from the Met’s Live in HD series of cinema transmissions.
It’s the weekend many New Yorkers have been waiting for, especially those inclined to Prohibition Era culture. The Jazz Age Lawn Party at Governors Island, the world’s original and largest prohibition era-inspired gathering, starts today and continues into tomorrow. Now in its twelfth year, the event started in 2005 as a small gathering on Governors Island, and has since grown into one of New York City’s most cherished, themed events. Every year, this event has attracted thousands of time travelers, who gather to discover the music and zeitgeist of the 1920s. What better way to end the summer than with one of our last tours of the season at Rooftop Reds, the world’s first rooftop vineyard? Join us at the vineyard, hidden inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard, to celebrate an end to the summer with a tour and wine tasting, sipping and absorbing an amazing view. Within the 14,800 square foot rooftop, you will see a unique urban planter system that is the first of its kind, developed with Cornell University and Finger Lakes industry leaders. It’s also an exciting day for New York City history buffs, who should definitely check out the Battle of Brooklyn Commemoration 2017 at Green-Wood Cemetery. Every year, Green-Wood hosts a morning of commemoration to honor all those who served in the battle with parades, cannon fire, horses, and re-enactments. The Battle of Brooklyn was fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood and was the first battle of the American Revolution after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Ever dream of going to a speakeasy? Well, from 6PM-10PM today, you can do so at the Back to the Futurist Secret Speakeasy hosted by the Museum of Interesting Things. At the speakeasy, the museum will “take you back to the future that the past never saw coming” with items that seem futuristic, but are actually so yesterday. For instance, see 16mm short films, hear original vinyl records, and enjoy actual antiques you can handle and get demonstrated. There will also be a party and music fest. Take part in a lively Brooklyn tradition at the Brighton Jubilee Festival, hosted by the Brighton Neighborhood Association. It’s taking place from 10AM-6PM, rain or shine, along Brighton Beach Avenue from Corbin Place to Coney Island Avenue. Enjoy live music, small rides, informational booths, and of course, tons of great food. As the association’s only fundraiser, the Jubilee attracts more than 125,000 people every year and is committed to bridging the communication gap through the international language of music.
It’s farewell to Coney Island Flicks on the Beach! The series is showing its last movie of the season, and it’s sure ending with a bang with a showing of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. At 8PM, a giant 40-foot inflatable screen turns the beach at West 10th Street into an outdoor movie theater. Today’s film is the acclaimed space opera film that everyone’s been talking about, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. If you’re in the mood for a different outdoor movie screening, Red Hook Flicks is also coming to an end today with the science fiction thriller Armageddon. The film is about a group of deep-core drillers sent by NASA to stop an asteroid from colliding with Earth. So bring a blanket, snacks, and friends and head over to Valentino Pier in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The movie will start at 8:30PM.
It’s the last day to see the New York Historical Society’s exhibit Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car, Illustrated by Barney Tobey. For the first time, the exhibit shows the whimsical preparatory watercolor illustrations of native New Yorker Barney Tobey in the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! The Magical Car by Ian Fleming. The illustrations are paired with the book’s page proofs as well as additional cartoons created by Tobey, who published over 1,200 of them in the New Yorker.
Cyclists rejoice, because the New York City Unicycle Festival starts today! Now in its 8th year, this annual, four-day event boasts “one-wheel madness” and brings together people of all unicycling levels who are interested in riding. From recreational riders, to world-class performers, unicycle enthusiasts, novices, and even circus enthusiasts and extreme sports viewers, the Unicycle Festival is sure to be a fun, unusual event for everyone. There will be opportunities for long distance rides, public shows, a learn-to-ride area, unicycle hockey, basketball, sumo, a trials course, and workshops.
The New York International Salsa Congress, New York City’s premier Latin dance and music event, is starting today at the New York Mariott Marquis in Times Square. Join thousands of dance and music aficionados to witness the rebirth of the New York International Salsa Congress. Enjoy workshops and performances from today’s most talented dancers, live music from world-famous bands, and dancing all night long. The last day for this lively dance festival is September 4th.
