Explore overlooked city sights on one of our expert-led NYC walking tours!
Untapped Cities is all about experiencing everything that New York City has to offer. This week, we are excited for pizza, farmers markets, and so much more!
Six to Celebrate is an initiative of the Historic Districts Council, an organization that works to preserve New York City’s historic neighborhoods and buildings. Six neighborhoods are chosen and receive preservation help and guidance from the HDC. One of the sites selected is Park Avenue, Manhattan. Join in at 6 pm tomorrow for a guided tour of the area led by urban historian Justin Ferate. We attended one of the HDC tours last year of the Bowery and of Pomander Walk, and had a great time. For more information on Monday’s tour, click this link.
Have you ever wondered how your favorite local farmer’s market began? Berry Benepe, the founder of the Greenmarket program in New York City, will be giving a presentation on how greenmarkets were first organized and brought to NYC. The discussion starts at 6:30 pm on the Lower East Side. You can RSVP here, and be sure to check out Untapped Cities coverage of NYC greenmarkets.
Elastic City organizes walks that make the “audience active participants in an ongoing poetic exchange with the places we live in and visit.” During the festival, artists led the public for free in participatory walks that challenged the notion of a traditional tour. Untapped Cities explored Gowanus, Brooklyn with Elastic City, and wrote all about it here. To mark the end of the festival, a benefit party will be held at the Jack Geary Contemporary in Tribeca. Expect a live DJ, eclectic performances, and even handmade vodka. Buy your ticket here!
Filmmaker Marcus Robinson will be screening his documentary ‘Rebuilding of the World Trade Center,’ featuring a “35mm time-lapse film and an ever evolving series of drawings and paintings captured directly from life on site.” The event will be held at The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York at 7 pm. Be sure to RSVP!
It may seem impossible to try all the amazing pizza restaurants in New York City, but the event Slice Out Hunger can get you closer to experiencing all the different slices that this city has to offer. More than 40 pizzerias, including big names such as Lombardi’s and DiFara, will drop off pizza pies at St. Anthony’s Church on Sullivan Street and Houston for an event that raises funds for the Food Bank of New York City. Starting at 6 pm, participants can buy $1 dollar tickets that can be used for slices, drinks, and raffle tickets. Each person is given a large box to hold all of their slices. Yum.
Interested in the power of satire? Authors Michael Alexander Kahn and Richard Samuel West are presenting their book, Puck: What Fools These Mortals Be at the Museum of the City of New York at 6:30 pm. Learn about Puck, the country’s “first political humor magazine,” and check out over 300 full-color lithographs from the publication. You can also grab a signed copy the book. To RSVP, click here.
At 7pm, Untapped Cities will be offering readers the chance for intimate, hour-long tour of the normally off-limits Woolworth Building lobby led by Lisa Swyers, a preservationist working directly with the archives of the Woolworth Building. In addition to a guided visit through the spectacular lobby, we will also visit the basement level where the bank vault is located and where the former entrances to the subway are. Following the tour, we will lead guests to an optional cocktail hour at the historic Fraunces Tavern! Get your tickets on our website (just a few left!), and check out the Top 10 Secrets of the Woolworths Building.

The Salmagundi Club, a private arts club near Union Square, is hosting its first in its series of three fall auctions at 7 pm. Over 200 artworks will be available for action. The Salmagundi website states that “collectors since the early 1900’s have flocked to these events, held every October and March, to find top-quality works of representational painting, drawing, fine-art graphics, photography, and sculpture, most at better-than-reasonable prices.” In addition to bidding on some breathtaking artworks, you can view the recently renovated space, which Untapped Cities visited last April.
The 12th Annual Open House New York Weekend starts today, with exclusive tours of over 300 of New York’s most fascinating historical buildings and private residences. Read our top list of tours here, which includes the Brooklyn Army Terminal, the United Nations, and the Barbarian Group Office.

The historic Richmond Town in Staten Island will be holding its annual Pumpkin Picking weekend from 11 am to 4 pm. The event is held on Decker Farm, which has its history in the early 1800s. There will be hayrides, face painting, farm animals, and even a corn stalk maze. Pumpkin picking will take place between 1o am and 12 pm. Besides the festivities, be sure to explore the town itself, which has a history that dates back to the 1600s and still boasts many of its original buildings. More information is available here, and be sure to check out our 5 Historic Houses Converted into Museums on Staten Island.
