Six to Celebrate is an initiative of the Historic Districts Council, an organization that works to preserve New York City’s historic neighborhoods and buildings. Six neighborhoods are chosen and receive preservation help and guidance from the HDC. One of the sites selected is Park Avenue, Manhattan. Join in at 6 pm tomorrow for a guided tour of the area led by urban historian Justin Ferate. We attended one of the HDC tours last year of the Bowery and of Pomander Walk, and had a great time. Have you ever wondered how your favorite local farmer’s market began? Berry Benepe, the founder of the Greenmarket program in New York City, will be giving a presentation on how greenmarkets were first organized and brought to NYC. It may seem impossible to try all the amazing pizza restaurants in New York City, but the event Slice Out Hunger can get you closer to experiencing all the different slices that this city has to offer. More than 40 pizzerias, including big names such as Lombardi’s and DiFara, will drop off pizza pies at St. Anthony’s Church on Sullivan Street and Houston for an event that raises funds for the Food Bank of New York City. Starting at 6 pm, participants can buy $1 dollar tickets that can be used for slices, drinks, and raffle tickets. Each person is given a large box to hold all of their slices. Yum.
Interested in the power of satire? Authors Michael Alexander Kahn and Richard Samuel West are presenting their book, Puck: What Fools These Mortals Beat the Museum of the City of New York at 6:30 pm. At 7pm, Untapped Cities will be offering readers the chance for intimate, hour-long tour of the normally off-limits Woolworth Building lobby led by Lisa Swyers, a preservationist working directly with the archives of the Woolworth Building. In addition to a guided visit through the spectacular lobby, we will also visit the basement level where the bank vault is located and where the former entrances to the subway are. Following the tour, we will lead guests to an optional cocktail hour at the historic Fraunces Tavern! Dwell on Design NY, curated by the editors of Dwell magazine, debuts at 82 Mercer in SoHo October 9 and 10, with 5,000 members of the design elite gathering for innovative installations and onstage discussions centering around contract design, public space, urban infrastructure, and more. The Pirate Pub Crawl has arrived in NYC! Dress up in your best pirate garb and head downtown for an afternoon of treasure maps, drink specials, and general revelry with fellow pirate-enthusiasts. RSVP for free here!
The historic Richmond Town in Staten Island will be holding its annual Pumpkin Picking weekend from 11 am to 4 pm. The event is held on Decker Farm, which has its history in the early 1800s. There will be hayrides, face painting, farm animals, and even a corn stalk maze. Pumpkin picking will take place between 1o am and 12 pm. Besides the festivities, be sure to explore the town itself, which has a history that dates back to the 1600s and still boasts many of its original buildings.
