Halloween is approaching and this week’s Untapped Events are sure to get you in the spirit of the holiday, especially with our 2015 off-the-beaten path guide to Halloween. And while not Halloween-related, we’re very excited for our upcoming Untapped Cities-exclusive tour of the normally off-limits Woolworth Building led by building architect Cass Gilbert’s great granddaughter, Helen Post Curry. Whip out your fake blood and ripped clothing – it’s New York’s Zombie Crawl! The night of the living dead starts at Twins Pub on 421 9th Street and will then to the Museum of Sex for cocktails, and then Slake NYC for “live” music by punk bands, Jungle Junkies and the Nines and Bikini Carwash.
Lovers of interior design should not miss out on the Museum of the City of New York’s discussion of the book Interior Landmarks: Treasures of New York. Authors will be providing a behind the scenes look at some of the City’s little-known but fascinating landmarked interiors. They will provide an insider’s look at places like City Hall, the Tweed Courthouse, Loew’s Paradise Theaters, the Four Seasons Restaurant, and more.
The Department of Art History at New York University will be examining one of the major contributors to the New York City’s public school systems, Charles B. J. Snyder. For thirty years, this revolutionary architect for the Board of Education created innovative construction techniques to improve the school system’s health and safety standards. Hidden in Plain Sight: The Progressive-Era Public Schools of Charles B. J. Snyder will take place at 100 Washington Square Park and is free to the public.
The 2015 Lowline Antigala will take place at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, located at 172 Norfolk Street. Never heard of an “anti-gala?” The Foundation explains that it’s their effort to break down traditions and norms. They hope the event will help to develop the Lowline park and community in new, inclusive, and creative ways. Proceeds will go towards the Lowline’s ongoing advocacy and development. The Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation will be presenting renowned musician Andy Statman and the Andy Statman Trio at the main sanctuary of the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Enjoy one of the best klezmer bands in this a breath-taking National Historic Landmark on the Lower East Side.
Do the old Tredwell’s still haunt the Merchant’s House Museum? Tour the Museum by candlelight and find out for yourself! The New York Times has even said this is “Manhattan’s Most Haunted Mansion.” The Museum will be conducting these paranormal investigations this weekend and Halloween weekend.
Encounter zombies, werewolves, and witches on a haunted walk through Prospect Park. This Saturday from 12 pm – 3 pm, the Prospect Park Alliance will host its 36th Annual Halloween Haunted Walk and Fair on Lookout Hill and Nethermead. The event is free to the public and is ideal for families with children 7 – 12.
Untapped Cities is excited to offer this new, Untapped Cities-exclusive tour of the normally off-limits Woolworth Building led by building architect Cass Gilbert’s great granddaughter, Helen Post Curry, who runs the Woolworth Building tours. In addition to a guided visit through the spectacular lobby, we will also visit the cellar level where the bank vault is located and where the former entrances to the subway are, and provide special access to the gorgeous mezzanine level.
We will be honoring the lost original Pennsylvania Station with a special anniversary tour of the Remnants of Penn Station – of which they are many. This tour, led by Justin Rivers, playwright of The Eternal Space and Tamara Agins, project manager at the NYC Department of City Planning, will take guests on a quest tracking down obscure architectural fragments. Guests for this tour will also get a special reproduction of the ticket for the first train that came into Penn Station.
A Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Flotilla in the Harlem Meer, sponsored by the Central Park Conservatory. Located at 110th Street, in between Fifth and Lenox Avenues, the event will include live music, spooky stories, pumpkin carving, and the Conservatory’s signature pumpkin flotilla. The flotilla will set sail across the Harlem Meer at twilight. The event is free and tickets are not required; however, they request that you RSVP.
