How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
Untapped Cities is excited to announce a new series of tours for Untapped Cities Insiders in collaboration with 6sqft and New York City’s leading architectural firms. Over the coming months, Insiders will gain exclusive access to the studios of the firms like COOKFOX and FXCollaboartive, which have both been featured in 6sqft’s “Where I Work” series, to learn about current and future projects and see where the architects work. If you are an Untapped Cities Insider, you can join these tours for free! Not an Insider yet? Become a member today to gain access to free behind-the-scenes tours and special New York City events all year long. The first tour in the series will be of COOKFOX architectural studios in Midtown on December 3rd.
COOKFOX architects are behind the design for a proposed 588,000-square-foot commercial addition to the St. John’s Terminal building in Hudson Square, a 42-story mixed-use tower on the Williamsburg waterfront at the Domino Sugar site, and many other New York City addresses. The firm’s offices can be found inside the 1921 Fisk Tire Building, a building designed by Carèrre & Hastings on what was once Automobile Row, an area filled with towers built by companies like B.F. Goodrich and General Motors.

COOKFOX designed their studio to explore the healthiest possible workplace, joining three garden terraces in an expression of their mission to connect people to nature within the built environment. The full-floor studio is anchored by framed views of gardens to the east and west. A vegetable garden and apiary on the eastern terrace connect to a communal kitchen and dining space called the “harvest area,” while across the studio, staff and visitors meet in a landscape of native trees, wildflowers and grasses. Visual and physical connections with the nature of the terraces extend into the studio space in the use of natural materials and textures which stimulate the same positive, healthy biological responses. The lighting system prioritizes daylighting and supports healthy circadian rhythms, while high-quality air filtration, zoned temperature control, CO2 monitoring and low-VOC materials ensure the best possible indoor air quality.

On December 3rd, join Untapped Cities Insiders and 6sqft on a private guided tour of the COOKFOX offices with Jared Gilbert, the Director of Communications. This tour of the studio will illuminate the intentions behind the manifestation of the space, as well as the biophilic principles that guide much of COOKFOX’s work and its design of the studio.
