Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
Every night from this evening through Saturday, Battery Park City will be aglow for the second annual Illumination Spring Showcase. This multi-sensory festival “brings light to life” with mesmerizing and interactive light art installations by artists from across the globe. Visitors of all ages are welcome to this family-friendly event where you can immerse yourself in the light installations, watch dazzling acrobatic performances, and get your skin painted with glowing designs!
Illumination Spring Showcase is a non-profit with a mission “to empower light artists to create brilliant works of art for the NYC community.” At the festival, the organization will highlight seven local and international light artists along with performers and DJs. The artists hail from South Africa, South Korea, Los Angeles, Brazil, and more. Each artist approaches the use of light from their own perspective, drawing inspiration from varying sources such as music, nature, robotics, society, and outer space.
In addition to the interactive light art featured at the Illumination Spring Showcase, there will also be performers, activities, and live DJ sets. You can watch jugglers with LED-lit props, see fire dancers, and be dazzled by Coney Island aerialists. You can even turn yourself into a work of art by sitting down for face painting with body paint artist Jeanette Salazar. Each night there will be live DJ sets and the final evening will conclude with a silent disco.
This festival will light up Belvedere Plaza from May 2nd to May 6th. It is free to attend and open to all ages. Glowing and brightly colored attire is encouraged! You can see opening times and register for a spot here.
