NASA and ARTECHOUSE NYC have united to produce an immersive, visual space journey for New Yorkers. Images featured in“Beyond the Light”, the latest immersive experience inside the Chelsea Market art space, come straight from galactical data captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. The new show reveals elements of the universe that are invisible to the naked eye and displays them in breathtaking visuals on the walls that surround you. With an original music score, the latest audio software technology, and NASA’s own findings, the installation emphasizes the presence of light in every pursuit of knowledge.

Beyond the Light at ARTECHOUSE
NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the James Webb Space Telescope Mission team at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), and Johns Hopkins University’s William H. Miller III Department of Physics & Astronomy all participated in ARTECHOUSE’S reimagining of NASA’s scientific processes. What started as a collection of space data and analytics has been transformed into a 25-minute cinematic journey of artistic storytelling. The visual story helps viewers navigate the disciplines used by astronomers to understand worlds beyond Earth, and puts into perspective the ways in which space and people interact.
While the main show envelopes viewers in 360-degree views of awe-inspiring images of the celestial bodies, six accompanying pieces explore the moon, heliophysics, the Mars rover, climate science, the biosphere, and NASA Spinoffs. Some of NASA’s aerospace engineering developments, specifically their Spinoffs, are used for more than just space exploration. The exhibit will show how these technologies are used to solve problems in everyday life by being incorporated into inventions like Cat Scans and pacemakers.
Beyond the Light, the equally educational and imaginative immersion teaches viewers to look for signs of “the beyond” in our own life and connect to what’s unfamiliar. Too deep? You can also play an instrument made from elements of the periodic table, discover the impact of the Carrington Event, or explore AI-generated dreams of the Mars Rover.
The goal of the new exhibit, according to Riki Kim, ARTECHOUSE’S Executive Creative Director, is to catalyze the audience’s imagination and induce inspiration. “Beyond the Light is equal parts knowledge and imagination, aiming to create an audio-visual experience that bypasses verbalized storytelling, making a lasting impression at the visceral level,” she says.
Beyond the Light is now on view inside the 100-year-old boiler room beneath Chelsea Market at 439 W 15th Street. The exhibition is open to the public in 30-minute sessions Monday through Friday from 3pm to 10pm, and Saturday through Sunday from 12pm to 10pm.
