Explore overlooked city sights on one of our expert-led NYC walking tours!
Next week, the first permanent space in New York City devoted to showing new media artworks will open in the historic boiler room of Chelsea Market, the former Meatpacking District headquarters of the National Biscuit Company. ARTECHOUSE will take over the previously unused 6,000-square-foot space below the main concourse and exhibit cutting-edge digital art exhibitions. The first show to open will be Machine Hallucinations, a mind-bending immersive experience by acclaimed digital artist Refik Anadol that uses artificial intelligence and photographs of New York City to tell a visual narrative. If you are an Untapped New York Insider, you can be among the first to experience the exhibit with a special visit on September 9th.
Anadol’s digital artwork utilizes a dataset of tens of millions of architectural images of New York City’s iconic buildings and public spaces and pulls them together to create an experiential environment that reveals hidden connections between unique moments in the city’s architectural culture and history. The space will be completely transformed and visitors will be enveloped by floor-to-ceiling images that show New York’s familiar spaces in stunning new ways. Anadol has created site-specific works for cultural landmarks around the world, but never on this grand a scale. Machine Hallucinations is the Los Angeles-based artist’s first large-scale, solo exhibition in New York.

The New York location of ARTECHOUSE, will offer the most technologically advanced art platform in the world. The goal is to “foster the creation of new, boundary pushing art and provide a platform for innovative creators whose work cannot be shown in traditional venues.” The space, which dates back to the 19th-century, will be decked out with the latest 21st-century technology. The modern equipment installed includes Barco-powered, 16K resolution, 150 megapixel, laser projection technology and L’ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound technology. These systems will allow ARTECHOUSE NYC works to be displayed with the largest seamless megapixel count and multidimensional sound.
