New York City is home to some of the most incredible works of public art. While walking under the Garment District’s new big button or following Hank Willis Thomas’ giant pointing finger sculpture into the sky, did you ever wonder how it’s made? Many works of art take shape inside the foundry and fabrication studio of Urban Art Project (UAP) in Rock Tavern, New York. Formerly the Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry, the complex in New York’s Hudson Valley has a history of art manufacturing that goes back over 50 years. UAP worked collaboratively with the Foundry for years before purchasing it in 2019. Now, Untapped New York Insiders are invited for a virtual look inside.

Join Mike Price, Senior Associate at UAP for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Rock Tavern foundry and fabrication workshop on May 4th! This live-streamed tour is free for Untapped New York Insiders! UAP believes that incredible things don’t happen; they’re created, nurtured, and believed in. Originally founded as Urban Artists in 1993 by brothers Daniel and Matthew Tobin, the company collaborates with emerging and established artists, architects, developers, and designers to deliver creative outcomes for the public realm. They engage in all aspects of the delivery process, from commissioning and curatorial services, through concept generation and design development right into fabrication and installation.

During this creative and inspiring virtual tour of the UAP Hudson Valley workshop, you’ll explore the latest UAP projects and get a behind-the-scenes look into modern methods of art-making and the integration between art, architecture, and design.

The Rock Tavern foundry and fabrication studio is just one of UAP’s many global sites. Other UAP workshop locations include Brisbane and Shanghai. Permanent art installations in New York City that have been crafted at the Rock Tavern workshop include Hank Thomas WIllis’ Unity in Brooklyn, the Big Button in Manhattan, and the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument by Meredith Bergmann in Central Park. Temporary installations currently on view in the city that UAP helped create include Now, part of Havah…to breathe, air, life at Madison Square Park and Bhati Kher’s Ancestor at the Doris C. Freedman Plaza. Past public art installations that UAP was instrumental in bringing to life include Ai Weiwei’s Good Fences Make Good Neighbors installations at Washington Square Park and Sanford Biggers’ giant Oracle at Rockefeller Center, among others.

The Rock Taven workshop is also where the famous Oscar statuettes are made for the annual Academy Awards. In addition to works of art, UAP also helps to create architectural elements. The company’s work can be found in New York City building such as the American Copper Buildings and One Vanderbilt.
