The Cyclone, Luna Park and Thunderbolt roller coaster have finally opened for the first day of the season this year on Coney Island. The Cyclone had been recently refurbished and painted to bring it back to what it looked like the day it opened in 1927. Opening day was a week late due to forecasted bad weather last weekend but the weather was so good this Saturday that Senator Chuck Schumer cycled in all the way from his home in Park Slope. Others there to christen the first ride of the day were elected officials, Borough President Eric Adams, Assemblywoman Pamela Harris, City Councilman Mark Treyger, and State Senator Marty Golden.
To quote a lively speech by Mark Treyger: “In Staten Island they need a groundhog to determine when Spring arrives. But here in southern Brooklyn, the roars of the Cyclone and Thunderbolt determine that spring has arrived!”
Luna Park will be open only on weekends until Memorial Day Weekend. Then it will stay open daily throughout the Summer and will again start to run on a limited schedule after Labor Day. Luna Park is also launching its new Platinum Wristband program, which allows visitors to experience some of Luna Park’s most thrilling rides at a discounted rate.
