Last May, the new Goethals Bridge was opened, replacing the original cantilever span between Staten Island and New Jersey that had been in place for nearly 90 years. It was the first new bridge built by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. The project took more than 16 years, with initial concept work and environmental reviews taking place starting in 2002 under Governor George Pataki. Four governors later, the new cable-stayed twin span bridge was completed.

The company EarthCam, which has also powered a time lapse video of Hudson Yards (see below) and an ongoing live cam of the Statue of Liberty and many other landmarks, filmed the construction progress over four years from 2014 to 2018. Lauren Hopkins, Marketing Manager for EarthCam tells us that the video incorporated “high-quality imagery featuring multiple unique perspectives of the project, including the deconstruction and removal of the former bridge.” The Goethals Bridge time lapse is EarthCam’s video of the month.
The Hudson Yards time lapse by EarthCam was taken using cinema-quality gigapixel cameras from 72 unique camera angles. A total of more than 3 million photographs were taken, including ultra-widescreen panoramic views of Manhattan cityscape.
