6. The Paris Café (1873)

The Paris Cafe, one of the oldest bars in NYC

Established in 1873, when the South Street Seaport was a working port, the Paris Café was originally part of Meyers Hotel and Bar across the street from the Fulton Fish Market. It was frequented by luminaries like Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Butch Cassidy, and Lauren Bacall.

In 2012, the pub was all but destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, which blew right threw the doors and flooded the place to the ceiling. Wine glasses were found floating in the water and just about everything was trashed, but the bar was restored and reopened in 2013. It recently underwent another closure as COVID-19 devastated New York’s bars, but recently reopened under new ownership. Its 1873 German Victorian bar has been restored.
