What better place to hold a conference about New York City’s waterfront than on the water? Every year the Waterfront Alliance brings together policymakers, waterfront advocates, journalists, academics, and engineering, architecture, and nonprofit professionals to discuss the most pressing issues facing our shared waterfront while sailing around New York City’s waterways. This year, Untapped Cities is proud to be a media sponsor of the 2019 Waterfront Conference, Rising Seas, Rising Risks: Adapting our Region. The conference will explore how we can use new strategies, policies, and financing options to build more resilient communities to prepare for sea level rise and increased coastal storms.
The Waterfront Conference features keynote addresses from regional elected officials and a variety of panel discussions. Previous keynote speakers include Mayor Bill de Blasio and Maria Torres-Springer, president and CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. This year, session topics will include advancing the green finance movement, looking ahead to the next NYC Comprehensive Waterfront Plan and more. Our own Untapped Cities founder, Michelle Young, will moderate a panel on communicating climate risk through art.
