In preparation for fall weather, we’ve rounded up a list of exciting events taking place throughout the city — from food festivals and boat parades to behind-the-scenes tours.
Friday, September 29th
Dive into the mystical world of Japanese film-maker and animator, Hayao Miyazaki, at the Miyazaki Art Show at Spoke Art Gallery. Over 100 artists from around the world will showcase their original art ranging from painting, sculpture, prints and more, interpreting characters and themes prevalent in Miyazaki’s films.
Saturday, September 30th
Come out and enjoy diverse cuisine and drinks at the Queens Night Market in Flushing Meadows Corona Park! The family-friendly market will open for the season and take place from 6pm to midnight. Over 100 independent will vendors selling merchandise, art, and food. Also partake in the small-scale cultural performances.
Feel like you could use an extra pair of jeans? Head out to Chelsea for New York Denim Days, a two day shopping event at the Metropolitan Pavilion that will include interactive displays, indigo dyeing workshops, denim mills and a street market right outside of the venue.
Sunday, October 1st
The 1st Annual New York Vegan Food & Drink Festival will take place on Randall’s Island this Sunday. The all vegan, day-long event will include 100 vendors, showcasing comfort food and a variety of drinks.
Fort Tyron Park will be transformed for the Medieval Festival, where performers, guests, and festival attendees will be dressed in costume. Teleport back in time and enjoy jousts between knights on horseback, as well as costumed vendors who will sell a wide variety of medieval crafts.
Explore areas of Freshkills Park on Staten Island that are usually closed off to the public. On Discovery Day, you can enjoy over 700 acres of greenery and eight miles of trails full of spectacular views. It’s a perfect opportunity for hiking, photography, bicycling and outdoor activities for all ages.
There are still a few spots left for Untapped Cities’ most popular tour, Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Abandoned Ellis Island Hospital! This event will provide exclusive access to the Ellis Island Hospital complex, taking you inside to visit select parts of the facilities, from its infectious and contagious disease wards to its autopsy room, as well as other locations not available on any public tour of the site.
Monday, October 2nd
The 14th Annual Fall for Dance Festival will bring the best of dance to New York City. The event will include an array of performances in various genres: tap, tango, hip-hop and ballet from dancers and renowned dance companies from all over the world.
Tuesday, October 3rd
The Parade of Boats is taking place at Pier 61! Take the opportunity to view working ships, historic sailboats, magnificent yachts, and fireboats, as a narrator describes their history and purpose.
Wednesday, October 4th
Partake in an illegal 1930s sideshow, where bootleggers, deviants, performers, and misfits all come together as part of Curiosities, an immersive, theatrical experience where patrons have the opportunity to curate their own experiences.
Thursday, October 5th
Learn about the impact of “broken windows” policing and other issues communities across the city have faced since New York City’s “stop-and-frisk” was deemed unconstitutional. The Brooklyn Community Bail Fund will have a discussion on how community organizations are fighting back against the criminalization of poverty in New York City. The panel discussion will be moderated by Brooklyn Law School Professor and author Jocelyn Simonson.
