This fall and winter, our Rediscover Your City tours will spotlight Brooklyn. Over the coming months, join us as we explore the bridges of the Gowanus Canal and visit the lost theaters of Bay Ridge!
Rediscover Your City Tours are led by Untapped New York’s expert and licensed tour guides who call NYC home. The places we visit on these tours will change seasonally and cover a variety of topics from architecture and art to transit and history.
Lost Theaters of Bay Ridge
On November 4th or 19th, join expert tour guide Daniel Pecoraro for a walk through Bay Ridge where he’ll reveal which gyms, chain stores, and supermarkets were once grand movie theaters of a time now past. In addition to tracking down the architectural remnants of former theaters, you’ll also stop at NYC’s oldest continuously functioning movie theater, Brooklyn’s Alpine Cinemas. As you gaze into the past, you’ll learn about the evolution of Bay Ridge and the story of Brooklyn and New York at the movies.
This December, join Daniel again as he gives us a closer look at another Brooklyn neighborhood, Gowanus. This tour will tell the story of Gowanus through the history of the Gowanus Canal’s pedestrian bridges and the Culver Viaduct. As you walk along the edge of the canal, you’ll how the former industrial center and current Superfund site is transforming from a derelict neighborhood to a playground for gentrification. Discover how a natural creek became a canal, how it became one of the most polluted sites in New York City, and how, in spite of the pollution, it is becoming one of the hottest neighborhoods in which to reside!
