Tour Length

2 hours

Look well and you might spot a sculpture from Louise Bourgeois or Ai Weiwei...

What if we told you that within our city lives the beating heart of the art of sculpting? The roots of some of the most recognizable works of art –from the Alice In Wonderland sculpture in Central Park to the Fiorello LaGuardia statue in LaGuardia Place – are actually hidden in plain sight in the Modern Art Foundry, housed inside the former carriage house of the famous Steinway Mansion. This New York art tour will be led by third generation owner, Jeffrey Spring.

Highlights

  • Get behind the scenes access inside the Modern Art Foundry which specializes in casting bronze sculptures – including many famous sculptures in New York City’s public spaces.
  • Learn about the whole process of artistic fabrication—starting from when an artist comes up with a vision to when the final product is realized.
  • The tour is led by third generation Foundry owner Jeffrey Spring.
  • See a live bronze metal pouring at 1:00 p.m.
  • Explore the foundry itself which is located in the former carriage house of the abandoned Steinway Mansion in Queens.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Modern Art Foundry The tour provided incredible information articulated by the owner and demonstrations by the foundry employees of pouring and finishing bronze sculptures. I was particularly amazed by the details of producing large pieces like the Louise Bourgeois spiders. The process is an art form in itself.

  • Incredible experience, highly recommend if you have any interest in Art! Jeffrey, the owner and tour guide, was obviously very knowledgeable and also really good at explaining the process to create a sculpture. I saw what looked like a leg of a Louise Bourgeois’ spider and Jeffrey confirmed that was her art… super cool!

  • Wow! Very cool experience. I had never seen bronze being poured before and as a photographer it was a really cool moment to capture. The guide was great and it was worth the walk from the subway!
